The blocking keeps five in with the back scanning for pressure before releasing, making this a man beater against zone drop conversions and a zone beater against static coverage since it stresses the middle of the field horizontally and vertically at once. Primary read progression starts with the corner route to see if it clears out the flat defender, then works down to the dig sitting behind the linebackers, and finishes with the stop and flat as checkdown options.

Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap since single high opens up the corner route against a hard flat defender Watch the flat defender on the frontside, if he sinks with the corner route the stop sits wide open underneath Key the middle linebacker depth, a shallow drop signals zone coverage and tells you the dig will need to be thrown on time before he can undercut it Look for user controlled defenders lurking in the shallow zone since they can jump the stop route if you telegraph the throw This concept struggles against a disciplined Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell where two deep defenders can squeeze both the corner and the dig, so be ready to check down to the flat or stop route quickly

Usage Tips

Use this on second and long or third and medium when you need a defined progression instead of a scramble drill concept

Check the safety alignment pre snap, if you see two high safeties the dig will have a clean throwing lane between the hashes

Motion or shift the back to confirm man coverage, if the linebacker follows into the flat you have an easy checkdown while the dig develops

Hot route the stop to a quick out or slant if you are getting a hard blitz look and need a faster underneath outlet

Pair this play with Exit Dagger or PA Deep Cross in the same set so the defense has to respect the vertical shots before you come back to this intermediate dig concept

Against Cover 3 look to hit the dig right as it crosses the opposite hash before the backside linebacker can wall it off
