PA Deep Out is a play-action shot play out of the Shotgun Deuce Close set that sells run action before releasing three vertical threats into deep breaking routes. Both outside receivers push straight upfield off the play fake and snap into deep outs toward the sideline, while the middle attached receiver runs a deep out from the slot that breaks underneath and behind the two outside routes, giving the quarterback a high low read to the boundary. The backfield player carries out a flare or check release to the flat, giving a quick outlet if the deep routes are covered, while the offensive line stays home to protect against the pass rush. This is a man beater at its core, using the play-action hold to freeze linebackers and stacked deep out routes to create natural separation against trailing defenders in man coverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch the strong safety and free safety depth before the snap, since a two high shell can bracket the outside deep outs and force the QB to the slot route. Post-snap, key the linebackers on their run fit versus their pass drop, since a hard bite on the play-action opens throwing lanes to all three routes. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the deep out lane on the boundary, since that lurk can jump the outside route if the quarterback stares it down. If you diagnose zone coverage post-snap, target the deep out from the slot since it settles into the void between the flat defender and the deep corner zone.
