Defensive Reads

Watch the flat or alley defender at the snap, if he crashes down to fill the run lane the peek throw to the back is wide open. Count defenders in the box before the snap, six or fewer usually means hand it off, seven or more should trigger the pass read. Zone coverages with a flat defender sitting outside are vulnerable because the stick and peek combo creates a natural rub that clears the underneath zone. Man coverage with an aggressive linebacker jumping the running back's peek route can be exposed by hot routing a receiver to a quick breaking route to punish the blitz. User controlled defenders sitting in a low hole zone or lurking to take away the stick route are the biggest threat, so identify if the user is playing zone drop or spying the RB before deciding to hand off or throw.

Usage Tips

Check the box count pre-snap and let the play call itself, hand it off if the count favors the run and throw the peek or stick if a defender is out of the box.

Use hot routes to send the backside receiver on a quick out or speed out if you diagnose man coverage, since the base concept already handles most zone shells.

This play shines on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) where defenses commit extra bodies to the run, since that opens the peek throw immediately.

Snap the ball quickly against blitz-heavy defenses to get the RPO out before extra rushers arrive, since the read window closes fast against pressure looks.
