PA Deep Over out of Shotgun Deuce Close (12 personnel) sells the run fake before attacking the intermediate to deep middle of the field. The diagram shows the deep over route working from the right side all the way across the formation to the opposite hash, a shallow drag or flat route releasing to the right underneath it, and a third receiver breaking hard on a vertical/dig angle from the left side of the formation. The primary read is the deep over crossing route first, since it stresses linebackers and safeties in coverage after the play-action freeze, with the underneath flat route as the checkdown and the vertical breaking route as a man beater outlet if the safety carries the crosser. This is a play-action pass designed to punish zone defenses that bite on the run fake, though the deep over also creates natural rub potential against man coverage.
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells, since a single high look means the deep over crosser has more room to work against soft zone coverage in the middle of the field. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up hard on the play-action fake it opens a throwing lane for the deep over before the second level defenders can recover. Key any user-controlled defender sitting in the middle hook or lurk zone, as an aggressive lurk can jump the deep over route if the quarterback holds it too long. Cover 3 zones with an aggressive Mike linebacker or a robber safety can undercut this route, so switch to the underneath flat or the vertical breaking route on the opposite side if you see that rotation. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play is most vulnerable defensively, since a fast cornerback can trail the deep over route across the field and break it up before it develops.
Use this on early downs like first or second and medium when defenses are more willing to respect the run fake out of 12 personnel. Check the safety depth before the snap, if you see two deep safeties sitting at 10-12 yards they are likely reading run first, which is exactly when the deep over hits big after the play fake. Hot route the underneath flat runner to a quick option or spot route if the defense shows blitz, giving your quarterback a faster outlet against pressure. Pair this play with Mtn Y Corner or PA Deep Curls earlier in a drive to establish the play-action look, then come back to PA Deep Over once linebackers start sitting on shorter routes. Against zone heavy opponents, hold the ball just long enough for the deep over to clear the hashes before releasing, since throwing early into a zone drop invites a user pick.
