PA Deep Over is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Deuce Close that sells the run fake before working a deep crossing route from one side of the field all the way to the opposite sideline. The diagram shows a receiver breaking off the play fake with a vertical release into a deep over route that crosses the entire field, a shorter receiver working a quick out or flat route to the boundary as a checkdown or man beater, and a third route climbing vertically on the opposite hash as a shot play alert. This is a play-action deep shot designed to punish zone defenses and single high safety looks, with the primary read progression starting on the deep over route and coming down to the flat route if the over is late developing or the defense sinks its zone underneath.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high versus two high safety alignment before the snap since this play is built to exploit one deep safety having to cover the entire width of the field on the deep over route. Watch linebacker depth and flow after the play fake. If linebackers bite hard on the run action and flow toward the line of scrimmage, the deep over route will have a clean throwing window behind them. Beware Cover 3 or Cover 1 with a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, since a user controlled defender can sit on the deep over route and jump the throw if the quarterback stares it down too long. Zone blitzes that bring extra pressure while dropping a defensive lineman into a shallow zone can disrupt the timing of this play, since the deep over needs time to develop and cross the field. Cover 4 or quarters shells with disciplined deep defenders passing off the crosser can shut this route down, forcing you to check down to the flat route or the opposite vertical route instead of forcing the deep throw.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and long or third and long when the defense is more likely to sit in zone shells expecting a pass, since the play fake loses value against aggressive man pressure that ignores the run fake.

Check the middle of the field pre snap. If you see a single high safety (MOFC), the deep over has room to work behind the linebackers and in front of the safety. If you see two high safeties (MOFO), be ready to check down to the flat route or hot route the underneath receiver into a quick breaking route.

Hot route the vertical route on the opposite hash into a deep comeback or dig if you are seeing consistent two deep shells, since that gives you a second answer versus split safety coverage without changing the whole concept.

Pair this play with Exit Dagger or PA Deep Cross earlier in a drive so the defense has to respect both the deep crosser and the vertical shot, then come back to PA Deep Over once you have identified their safety rotation tendencies.

Take the shot on early downs (first and ten or second and short) when play calling data suggests defenses are more likely to bite on the play action fake and step up run support with linebackers and safeties.
