Breakdown

RPO Alert Omaha is an RPO built off the Deuce Close 12 personnel look, giving the quarterback a true run/pass conflict read on the play side defender. The diagram shows both outside WRs running hitches or quick outs breaking to the sideline, with the read defender near the line of scrimmage box triggering the QB decision, while the run action stays inside behind the interior line. This is a run play at heart with an RPO tag: the primary read progression is run first, then peek to the alerted receiver if the read defender crashes down on the handoff.

Defensive Reads

Watch the alignment of the play side flat defender or slot corner before the snap, if he is sitting inside the box expect him to crash on run action, which opens the alert throw. Post-snap, key the linebacker depth: if linebackers stay shallow and flow hard to the run, the perimeter route wins outside quickly. Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells with aggressive run support are vulnerable to this RPO because the flat defender has dual responsibility he cannot fulfill fast enough. Man coverage on the outside WRs with no underneath help struggles against the quick breaking route since there is no time for the corner to recover. Beware disciplined zone defenses that stay in run reads without over crashing, since a controlled linebacker in a zone drop can jump the throwing lane if the QB tips the read too early.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs (1st and 2nd) when you want to stay balanced and keep the defense honest against both run and pass. Pre-snap, identify whether the play side defender is a true run fit or if he is sitting in a passing lane, since that dictates whether you should pull the ball or hand it off. If the defense shows a heavy box with 8 or more defenders crashing down, pull and throw the quick out to the alerted receiver before the corner can close. Pair this with Mtn RPO Zone Stick or RPO Read Cntr from the same set to keep defenders guessing between inside zone hand offs and quick perimeter throws. Against aggressive linebacker blitzes, this play punishes overpursuit since the RPO throw beats the run fit numbers instantly.
