Breakdown

Mtn Return HB Toss is a pitch run out of Shotgun Deuce Close with 12 personnel that uses a return motion man crossing the backfield before the snap to shift blocking angles and manipulate flow. The HB tosses the ball to the edge behind a lead blocker sealing the perimeter, with the offensive line reaching and climbing to the second level in a stretch-style scheme designed to hit outside once the edge is sealed. This is a pure run play built to attack overaggressive fronts and outnumbered edges, not a play-action or RPO look. The primary read is the edge defender and force player: if he gets pinned inside, the HB presses the toss to the sideline and turns the corner upfield.

Defensive Reads

Key the defensive end and outside linebacker on the play side snap, since their leverage decides whether the toss can get to the sideline or gets strung out. Watch for a nano blitz or edge crash from the slot defender, which is the biggest killer of toss plays if the perimeter blocker cannot get a hat on him in time. Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment: a single high shell with the corner playing off gives the toss more room to bounce outside before help arrives. Post-snap, user the play side linebacker or safety immediately to fill the alley, since AI pursuit can be late on outside toss concepts and this is where most explosive gains get shut down. Teams in heavy zone with linebackers sinking to their landmarks are vulnerable to this call because they will not diagnose the toss quickly enough to reset outside contain.

Usage Tips

Use the return motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into flowing the wrong direction before the toss even happens, then hit the alert side once you confirm the defense follows the man in motion.

Call this on early downs or short yardage when defenses are stacked to stop inside runs, since the toss attacks the edge before an over-pursuing front can react.

Check the box count before the snap: if the defense has six or more in the box with no outside leverage, kill the play or hot route the perimeter blocker to adjust the angle.

Pair this with Mtn Stick or RPO Read Mtn Stick from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the edge run without opening up quick game throws behind the motion.

Against teams that consistently crash the edge with a slot corner or safety, sequence this with Mtn Y Option or Mtn WR Corner to punish that aggressive flow with a run fake into a vertical shot.
