Mtn Y Corner is a play-action-style dropback pass out of Shotgun Deuce Close that uses a pre-snap motion to shift the tight end into the backfield look before the snap. The Y runs a corner route from in-tight, climbing vertically then breaking outside toward the sideline as the deep primary read, while a shallow crosser sits underneath dragging across the formation and the outside receiver runs a deep vertical to stretch the safety. Up front the line shows a run-blocking style scheme with the fullback area sliding across protection, giving this the look of a play-action boot concept designed to freeze linebackers before the QB works his corner and crosser combo. Primary progression is Y corner first, working back to the underneath drag if the corner is capped.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, key the safety alignment over the tight end side, if the safety cheats down into the box before the motion, you are likely seeing man coverage or a blitz look. Watch the linebacker who has to react to the pre-snap motion, if he trails across the formation it confirms man coverage and opens up the corner route for a big gain. Post-snap, identify any user-controlled defender sitting in a lurk spot underneath the corner route, that defender can undercut the throw if the quarterback does not sell the play-action fake. This concept struggles against Cover 3 zone with a deep half safety sitting outside since that defender can squat on the corner route the entire way. Check for a linebacker spy or delayed blitz off the edge, since the play-action mesh point can be vulnerable if the offensive line does not get a clean initial punch on any run blitz look.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense rotates or slides a linebacker to follow, this tells you instantly if you are facing man or zone coverage.
This is a strong man beater against Cover 1 and Cover 3 man since the Y corner route creates natural separation working away from underneath defenders after the motion clears traffic.
Best called on second and medium or third and long situations where the defense is more likely to play off coverage and give the corner route room to develop.
If the corner route is capped by a deep defender, hot route the shallow drag into a speed out or check it down quickly since the timing on this play is more of a mid-tempo developing throw.
Pair this with Mtn Stick or RPO Read Mtn Stick earlier in a drive so linebackers sit on the quick stick concept, then hit them with the deeper Y Corner shot when they bite on shorter routes.
