Breakdown

Y Stick out of Singleback Wing Pair Heavy shows a three level stretch to the closed side with two receivers releasing outside and one running a vertical stem up the middle. The near X runs an arrow route into the flat while the second receiver off the line pushes up and breaks outward on a stick route, and the inside receiver climbs vertically on a seam or clear out to occupy the middle of the field. This is a classic man beater built on the stick concept, using quick outs and flat combos to attack off man leverage and hard corners, with the primary read progressing from the outside flat route to the stick breakpoint and finally to the vertical seam if the linebacker or safety bites underneath.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing man or zone based on corner depth and linebacker alignment over the stick receiver. This concept beats man coverage and Cover 3 zones where the flat defender has to choose between the arrow route and the stick breakpoint. If you see two deep safeties and hard outside corner leverage, expect the underneath stick route to be the primary answer since there is no deep help needed. Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the stick window or lurking underneath the vertical seam route, this can jump the route and bait a turnover if the quarterback throws on time without checking the drop. Cover 2 with an aggressive nickel defender or a Tampa 2 look with a deep hole player can shut this down by taking away both the flat and the seam simultaneously, so be ready to check down or throw off timing if that shell appears post-snap.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and short or third and medium when you need a quick, high percentage throw against man coverage. Check the flat defender and outside cornerback leverage before the snap, if the corner is playing outside shade with no safety help over the top, the stick route to the flat side will be open immediately. Hot route the vertical seam runner into a shallow drag or option route if you are facing zone coverage to give yourself an extra underneath conversion option. Pair this play with Mtn Spot or Mtn Mesh Drive in the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and mesh concepts out of the same formation look. Against blitz-heavy defenses, get the ball out on rhythm to the flat route since the stick concept is designed to beat pressure with a quick three step drop.
