HB Inside Zone

Breakdown

HB Inside Zone out of Singleback Wing Pair Heavy is a downhill zone run play built off 12 personnel with two tight ends aligned in a wing look for extra beef at the point of attack. The line flows in unison to the play side, with the fullback and wing TE working combo blocks at the second level while the running back reads the double team on the defensive tackle before choosing his lane. This is a run play designed to beat light boxes and gap defenses, and the primary read progression starts with the frontside double team, moves to the backside cutback lane if the defense flows too hard, and ends with a bounce read if the edge is sealed.

Defensive Reads

Look for a 2 high safety shell pre snap, since that usually means one less defender in the box and a cleaner lane for the frontside combo block. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sit back and read instead of flowing hard downhill you likely need to bounce the run outside rather than trust the initial hole. Identify if the defense is running a 4-3 under front with the 3 technique shaded to the wing TE side, since that alignment can clog the primary read and force an early cutback. Key on user controlled defenders crashing down immediately after the snap, an aggressive user linebacker flying to the line opens up the backside cutback lane. This play struggles against heavy run blitz packages with 8 in the box or a Mike linebacker sitting unblocked in a gap, so check the A gap and B gap fill defenders before committing to the handoff.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box to avoid a stacked front eating the play. Use the wing TE alignment to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety over the top, since that tips run blitz or run commit coverage. Hot route the backside TE to a chip or seal block against a stacked 3 technique if you see edge pressure creeping in pre snap. Pair this play with HB Stretch and HB Counter Wk to keep the defense honest on flow direction, since all three plays start with similar backfield action but attack different gaps. Run this on early downs in short yardage or 2nd and short to stay ahead of the chains and set up Mtn PA Deep Flood or PA Ctr Shot off the same personnel for a play action changeup later in the series.
