This is a Cover 3 beater designed to stress the flooded side's deep third and hook defenders with three levels of routes stacked vertically, and the primary read progression starts with the flat defender: if he sits, work the comeback or dig, and if he widens with the flat route, the vertical up top should be open behind him.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety pre-snap, this confirms Cover 3 or Cover 1 and tells you the deep flood route has a numbers advantage against the deep third defender. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sinks under the vertical route jump the flat throw immediately since that defender is playing the wrong level. Key the play side linebacker's reaction to the run fake, a linebacker who bites hard on the play-action opens up the intermediate comeback or dig window behind him. Beware of user controlled safeties sitting in the deep middle or lurking the crossing route, since a smart user can rob the deep comeback route or jump the backside dig if he reads your eyes. This play struggles against Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties, since the extra deep defender can help over the top on the flood side vertical route and take away the biggest chunk play.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment pre-snap because a single high safety confirms Cover 3 and tells you the flood side will be outnumbered against the deep defenders.

Use the motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows across the formation you are getting man coverage and should lean toward the deep comeback route as your man beater.

Hot route the backside crosser into a deeper dig if you are facing zone drop linebackers that are sitting underneath and taking away the shallow crossing window.

Pair this play with Mtn PA X Zig Flood in your call sheet so the defense sees similar play-action shells but has to defend a different vertical stem, keeping linebackers honest on their run fits.

Use this on second and long or first and ten to punish defenses that are selling out to stop the run with light boxes, since the play-action fake holds linebackers just long enough to open the flood side.
