Mtn Power O is a gap scheme power run out of Singleback Wing Pair Heavy with 12 personnel, using the wing motion to bring an extra blocker across the formation before the snap. The offensive line down blocks toward the play side while the fullback or motioned wing kicks out the edge defender, creating a lead lane for the HB to run through the B or C gap. This is a downhill run play designed to beat light boxes and overaggressive edge defenders, with the primary read being the play side gap first, then bouncing outside off the kick out block if the defensive end squeezes down inside.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a stacked box pre-snap since Mtn Power O struggles against extra defenders crashing downhill before the kick out block can develop. Keep an eye on the edge defender assigned to the wing motion side, if he stays disciplined and does not bite on the fake he can blow up the kick out and force a negative play. Look for linebackers reading the pulling blocker and flowing hard to the play side gap, which is the key indicator of a run blitz or gap exchange defense. If the safety rotates down into the box pre-snap, this signals man or Cover 1 run support and the HB should be ready to cut back against overpursuit. Zone defenses with light boxes and off linebackers are the ideal matchup since the lead blocker will have a clean angle on the edge defender in space.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety down into the box, which tells you if you are getting a run blitz look.
This play works best on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when you want to stay balanced and keep the defense honest.
User the fullback or lead blocker through the hole so you can adjust the kick out block in real time against unblocked defenders shooting the gap.
