Breakdown

HB Dive out of Singleback Wing Pair Heavy is a pure downhill run play designed to attack the interior gaps with a north-south blocking scheme. The offensive line double teams at the point of attack while the fullback led alignment from the two tight ends provides extra hats at the second level, sealing off linebackers to create a vertical crease. This is a base run concept, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read for the ball carrier is a one cut decision: identify the first open gap between the guards and get skinny through it before the linebackers fill.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a stacked box with linebackers creeping to the line pre-snap, this signals a run blitz designed to beat HB Dive at the mesh point. If the defense shows two high safeties and light box numbers, this is the ideal look to hit the dive quickly before help arrives. Key the middle linebacker post-snap, if he shoots a gap immediately instead of reading the play, bounce the run to the opposite side of the double team. User controlled defenders flying downhill from depth usually indicate a spy or lurk assignment abandoned early, which opens up a cutback lane behind the initial front. Against odd fronts with a nose tackle head up on the center, expect penetration up the middle, so be ready to bounce outside off the tight end blocks rather than force it inside.

Usage Tips

Use HB Dive on early downs when you need a positive gain to stay ahead of the sticks and want to establish tempo against base personnel. Check the defensive line spacing pre-snap, if you see a single high safety with linebackers stacked tight to the box, this is a good look for the interior run. Pair this play with HB Stretch and HB Inside Zone in the same set to keep defenders guessing between outside zone and inside dive, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits. Against aggressive user blitzers, hot route the fullback or extra tight end to chip a looping defender before releasing to the second level, this buys the running back an extra half second to find the crease. Mix in Mtn Power O and 26 Duo from the same formation to disguise your run blocking scheme, since all three plays start with similar line splits but attack different gaps.
