Breakdown

HB Stretch out of Singleback Wing Pair Heavy is an outside zone run that sends the offensive line and both tight ends flowing laterally to attack the edge before the back decides where to plant. This 12 personnel look gives you extra beef on the perimeter with two in line blockers, making it a strong horizontal displacement run rather than a man or zone pass beater. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is backside cutback lane first, then bounce to the alley if the edge defender and linebacker overrun the flow, then bang it outside off the wing tight end's kick block if the defense sells out on the cutback.

Defensive Reads

Watch for fast flowing linebackers who overpursue to the play side, this opens the backside cutback lane that is the core of the stretch concept. Bring a spy or user the middle linebacker if the CPU or opponent likes to crash the edge with a defensive end, since a disciplined backside end can blow this play up if he stays home. Gap exchange stunts and edge contain defenders who sit and read will slow this play down, look to bounce outside only if the read progression confirms the alley is open. Heavy box counts with eight or nine defenders in the box signal a run blitz, in that case check to a quick pass like Y Stick or use pre-snap motion to get a numbers advantage. User controlled safeties flying downhill too early on the snap can be exploited with the cutback, but if the safety stays disciplined and reads through the line, the cutback lane disappears and you should bang it outside instead.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs (first and ten or second and short) when you want to keep the defense honest and set up play-action shots later in the drive.

Check the defensive line width before the snap, if the edge defenders are lined up wide or upfield, the cutback lane will be there immediately.

Use manual motion or a hot route on the wing tight end into a slight down block if you are facing a heavy edge blitz look, this keeps the frontside gap sealed longer.

Pair this play with Mtn PA Deep Flood or PA Sprint HB Flat in the same set once the defense starts crashing hard on stretch, the run action pulls linebackers and safeties out of position for the play-action shot.

Sequence HB Stretch with HB Inside Zone and HB Counter Wk to keep second level defenders guessing on run direction and gap integrity, since all three plays share similar initial line movement.
