The diagram shows the outside receiver running a corner route up the sideline, the inline TE sitting down on a quick out at the sticks, and the backside receiver on a deep dig that clears the intermediate middle. The HB releases into the flat with a quick pivot into the boundary, giving the quarterback a built-in checkdown while the corner route occupies the deep defender and the dig sits behind the underneath zone. Progression starts with the flat route to see how the underneath defender reacts, works up to the corner for the zone-clearing shot, and comes back to the dig if the middle of the field opens up.

Defensive Reads

Key the underneath zone defender responsible for the flat to hook area, since Spot puts him in a bind between the HB flat route and the TE sit route at the sticks. Against Cover 3, the corner route should win over the top if the deep third defender bites on the flat or sit routes underneath him. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, because a shallow drop means the dig route behind him will be open once he commits to the flat side. This concept struggles against a hard Cover 4 or press man look with safety help over the top, since the corner route loses its natural leverage and the dig can be jumped by a rangy middle linebacker sitting in the passing lane. Identify blitz packages by watching for the slot defender crashing downhill presnap, which signals man coverage on the outside and turns the flat route into a quick answer against a blitzing linebacker.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and medium to third and long when you expect zone coverage, since the Spot concept is designed to flood one side and put a defender in conflict between the flat and the sit route. Presnap, check for a single deep safety look because that usually signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, both of which the corner route and dig can punish over the top and underneath respectively. If the defense shows two high safeties, hot route the flat runner into a quick option or speed up the corner route to beat Cover 2 before the safety can rotate over. Pair this play with Mtn PA Deep Flood or Mtn PA X Zig Flood in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the quick underneath zone beater and the deeper flood shots, keeping linebackers honest. Motion the wing TE before the snap to identify man versus zone: if a defender follows the motion man across the formation you are looking at man coverage and should prioritize the corner route as your first read against a trailing corner.
