Mtn Spot out of Singleback Wing Pair Heavy 12 personnel gives you a classic Spot concept married to a corner route on the backside. The backside receiver runs a corner route up the numbers while the front side stacks a flat route underneath a deep corner from the slot, with the running back working an angle route out of the backfield to complete the spot triangle. This is a Cover 3 beater built to attack the flat defender and hole defender with the angle and flat routes while the corner routes stress the deep thirds, so read the flat to corner to angle progression based on the underneath defender's leverage.
Defensive Reads
Identify single high safety pre-snap, which signals Cover 3 and tells you the flat to corner combo will have soft spots underneath. Watch the flat defender post-snap, if he sinks with the corner route the flat is wide open for an easy completion. Key the hole defender or robber, since a good user player sitting in that area can jump both the angle route and the flat read. Против Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells this concept loses some of its bite, since the corner routes run into help over the top from two deep safeties. Watch for underneath blitzes off the edge, since the RB angle route becomes a critical blitz-beater outlet if the offensive line is outnumbered.
Usage Tips
Check pre-snap for Cover 3 shells with a single deep safety and squatty corners, since this concept is designed to exploit that hole defender in the flat.
Use the RB angle route as your checkdown and rhythm throw against zone drops when the underneath defenders sink deep on the corner routes.
Motion the backside X if allowed to confirm man versus zone before the snap, since the corner route on that side is more effective if the defense shows zone.
Pair this play with Mtn PA Deep Flood or Mtn PA X Zig Flood to keep defenses honest on play action after they start jumping the spot concept.
Best called on early downs or second and medium when you want a high percentage flat throw with a corner route home run shot built in.
