Breakdown

26 Duo out of Singleback Wing Pair Heavy 12 personnel is a downhill power run play that uses a Duo blocking scheme up front, with both TEs and the wing aligned to the strength side to create double team combo blocks at the point of attack. The HB starts aligned to the play side and presses the mesh point before reading his blocks, patiently pressing the hole to let the double teams climb to the second level. The primary read progression starts with the play side double team at the point of attack, then works to the backside linebacker fit, and finally to the safety filling downhill, since Duo is designed to let the back set up defenders vertically before cutting off the double team.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the linebackers are stacked tight over the play side double team, since that alignment allows them to shoot gaps and disrupt the Duo combo before it climbs. Look for safety depth in the box: a safety cheating into the alignment at eight yards or closer is keying run and can beat the back to the cutback lane. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step: if he attacks downhill immediately instead of reading the double team, he is likely shooting a gap on a run blitz that can blow up Duo. Watch for user-controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side TE and wing, since that leaves the backside cutback lane open if the back presses correctly. This concept beats light boxes and base fronts but struggles against odd fronts with an extra defender aligned directly over the double team gap.

Usage Tips

Use 26 Duo on early downs in normal or run heavy personnel counts to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest against your play-action shots out of this set.

Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense has six or fewer in the box, this is a green light run because Duo's double teams will win up front.

Pair this with Mtn PA Deep Flood or PA Sprint HB Flat off the same Wing Pair Heavy look so the defense has to respect both the run action and the pass threat from identical alignment.

Manually control the play side TE or wing blocker to secure the double team longer against user blitzers who try to shoot the gap before the double team can climb.

Avoid calling this against stacked fronts with extra second level defenders showing blitz, since Duo needs numbers at the point of attack to displace the front.
