Breakdown

PA Jet Sweep out of Singleback Doubles Y Off Close sells the jet sweep fake to the motion man before the quarterback boots off the fake with a deep crossing route concept behind it. The diagram shows the two outside receivers running deep comebacks up the sideline, an underneath receiver working a shallow drag across the formation, and the fullback or H-back releasing on a deep dig back across the middle as the read read progression flows from the deep in breaking route to the sideline comebacks. This is a play-action pass built to punish run blitzes and aggressive linebacker flow, using the jet motion and run fake to hold second level defenders before attacking the vacated middle and both sidelines.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage defenses get exposed on the deep comebacks along the sideline since defenders running with receivers in phase will struggle to break on comeback timing. Cover 3 and other zone shells with aggressive flat defenders are vulnerable to the deep dig sitting behind the underneath zone drop. Key the middle linebacker and weak side linebacker pre-snap, if they show run blitz or walk down toward the jet motion, the play-action fake should hold them long enough for the crosser to work open. Watch for a user controlled defender spying the quarterback on the boot action, since a disciplined spy can jump the deep in route or force a checkdown. Two high safety shells that stay deep and do not bite on play-action can take away both the comeback and dig, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball longer against pressure.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs like first or second and medium to keep the defense honest against your run-heavy jet sweep and inside zone calls from this same set. Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, if they crash down hard on jet motion or show run blitz fits, the play-action fake will freeze them and open the deep crosser. Hot route the shallow drag into a deeper option against zone heavy shells if the underneath defenders sit and rob the crossing lane. Pair this call with actual Jet Sweep and Zone Fake Jet earlier in a series so defenders start keying run fits off the same motion, then hit them with this play-action shot once they bite. Best used on early downs or in short yardage where defenses expect run based on personnel and formation tendency.
