Switch out of Singleback Doubles Y Off Close is a four verts variant built around a scissors concept on the left side, where the two receivers cross paths early before both climbing vertically up the sideline and up the middle. On the right side the TE runs a corner route while the outside receiver bends into a deep post, and the HB releases up on a check release seam or streak depending on the diagram look. The HB stays in briefly to check protection before working up the middle, and the primary read progression starts with the post/corner combo on the right, works to the scissors crossers on the left, and settles on the HB seam if the underneath opens up. This is a vertical stretch play designed to beat zone coverage by flooding all four underneath and deep zones at once, though it also has man beater qualities thanks to the scissors action creating natural rub and separation.
Defensive Reads
Read the safety alignment before the snap, since a single high safety tips Cover 3 or man coverage, both of which Switch is designed to attack with the scissors rub and vertical stretch. Post snap, watch the flat defender on the corner route side, if he sinks too deep trying to help over the top, the corner route sits down right behind him for an easy pitch and catch. Key the middle linebacker's drop, if he widens to help on the scissors crossers, the HB seam route up the middle becomes wide open behind him. Watch for a Cover 2 shell with two deep safeties, since they can rob both the post and one of the vertical routes on the left side, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball and take a sack. Identify blitz packages pre-snap by checking linebacker depth, a walked up backer or nickel corner in the box signals a nano blitz that can beat the HB check release before the deep routes develop.
Usage Tips
Use this play on second and long or third and long when you need to attack deep zones with four verticals stacked against a single high safety look.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two deep safeties or one, since Switch is most effective against single high shells like Cover 3 where the scissors action confuses zone landmarks.
If you see Cover 2 shells, key the corner route on the TE first since it sits behind the flat defender and in front of the deep safety, creating an easy window in the seam.
Hot route the HB into a delayed seam or keep him in as a check release blocker if the defense shows a heavy blitz look, since the scissors and corner routes take time to develop.
Pair this play with Switch X Comeback in the same set so you can run the vertical shot early in a series, then come back to the comeback route once the defense starts jumping the verticals.
