HB Wham is a power run play out of Singleback Doubles Y Off Close that pulls a lead blocker across the formation to kick out the first threat off the edge, clearing a lane for the HB behind him. The diagram shows the HB taking a slight angle to the play side while the wham blocker crosses the formation to smash into the defensive end or first man off the ball, letting the offensive line work zone steps up to the second level. This is a run play designed to beat gap exchange and slanting fronts by using misdirection on the blocking scheme rather than the ball carrier's path, with the primary read being the wham block on the edge defender followed by the natural cutback lane created by the line's zone flow.
Key the defensive end or edge defender on the play side, since the wham blocker is targeting that exact gap and a slow read from the defense gets washed out immediately. Watch for user controlled defenders flowing hard to the wham side, if they diagnose the pull early they can blow up the timing before the kick out block lands. Look for linebackers reading the pulling blocker and filling the alley, disciplined backers who stay home in their gap rather than crashing take away the cutback lane. This run struggles against stacked fronts with extra defenders in the box, since the numbers advantage disappears once the wham blocker is accounted for pre-snap. Overaggressive edge defenders who shoot upfield without reading the puller get erased, but a patient edge that squeezes the wham block can force the HB to bounce outside into pursuit.
Use HB Wham on early downs when the defense is showing a wide 9 technique or crashing defensive end, since the wham blocker is designed to erase that exact threat.
Watch the defensive end and outside linebacker alignment pre-snap, if they are lined up wide or angled hard inside, this play has a clean path to kick them out.
Pair this with HB Dive or Inside Zone Split in the same set to keep defenders guessing between gap and zone runs, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.
Avoid calling this against heavy blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge before the wham blocker can get there, since the timing of the kick out block is critical.
On the stick, take the cutback if the playside gap collapses, the zone steps from the line often open a lane backside if the defense over-pursues the wham side.
