The offensive line sells run action to hold linebackers, and the underneath crosser occupies the shallow zone as a checkdown option while the two vertical routes stretch the secondary horizontally and vertically. This is a man beater designed to attack single high looks, with the primary read starting on the corner route and progressing to the post if the safety jumps the shorter throw.
Defensive Reads
Read the free safety pre-snap: if he is aligned deep middle in a single high shell, the post route is designed to attack the vacated seam behind the corner. Watch the flat defender and outside cornerback leverage at the snap, since aggressive jumps on the corner route open a passing lane for the post. Identify Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties, since this concept is more vulnerable to a squeeze on the corner route by the deep half defender. Key the linebacker drop on the play-action boot fake, as a disciplined backer sitting in the throwing lane can disrupt the post route's window. Look for blitz packages that bring pressure off the edge the QB is rolling toward, since a contained boot with no outlet can force a bad throw into the post.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs or second and short when defenses are more likely to bite on the run fake from the play-action boot action.
Check for single high safety alignment pre-snap since the post route behind the corner is designed to split a Cover 3 or Cover 1 shell.
If the corner sees man coverage with the corner and no safety help over the top, hot route the post to a bender if the linebacker depth is shallow enough to sit underneath.
