HB Dive out of Singleback Doubles Y Off Close is a straight downhill run play that sends the HB directly through the A gap behind the center and guards. The offensive line executes a man/down block scheme, sealing the interior gaps to create a vertical crease before the linebackers can fill, while both outside receivers and the TE run off their defenders to hold the perimeter defenders honest. This is a run play designed to punish light boxes and overpursuing linebackers, with the primary read being the initial A gap and a bounce to the B gap if the nose or Mike closes it down.
Defensive Reads
Watch the Mike linebacker's depth and gap alignment pre-snap, if he is stacked tight behind the nose expect a quick fill on the dive. Man coverage on the perimeter with safeties rotated deep usually means fewer underneath defenders in the box, making this a good man beater situational run. Identify if the defense is running a nano blitz package with an extra rusher shooting the A gap immediately after the snap, that alignment kills this play before it starts. Zone shells with safeties creeping down into the box (like Cover 3 Sky or Cover 4 buzz) load the interior and shut down the dive lane, so avoid calling this into stacked fronts. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles for penetration versus the double team, if they get skinny and shoot gaps quickly the cutback lane opens up on the backside.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive front pre-snap and look for a light box with six or fewer defenders before calling HB Dive.
Use this play on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to stay ahead of schedule and keep the defense guessing between run and pass.
If the defense shows a heavy blitz look with linebackers creeping to the line, consider audibling to HB Slam or HB Wham instead since those hit different gaps.
Pair HB Dive with PA Boot Slide or PA Jet Sweep later in a series since both plays start with the same backfield action and can freeze linebackers who bit hard on the dive the previous snap.
Trust your blocking and stay patient with the stick move at the line of scrimmage, do not bounce outside too early or you will lose the play design's leverage.
