Breakdown
Dragon Spacing is a horizontal stretch concept out of Singleback Doubles Y Off Close that spaces defenders out across the width of the field with quick, high percentage throws. To the left, the outside receiver runs a quick out breaking away from the formation while the inline slot works a short hitch underneath, and the QB gets an immediate hot route drag underneath from that side of the line marked in red. To the right, the play stacks a corner route and a deep dig combo up top while the flanker underneath runs a shallow drag into the flat, creating a natural triangle read from flat to intermediate to deep on that side. This is a classic zone beater built to attack soft spots in Cover 3 and Cover 4, with the primary read starting on the underneath spacing routes before working to the corner/dig combo if the zone widens.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and spacing since Dragon Spacing is designed to sit routes in the voids created by shallow zone drops in Cover 3 and Cover 4. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in a shallow zone or lurking over the drag route, since that is the primary window this play attacks and the first thing a smart defender will take away. If corners show hard outside leverage with safety help over the top, expect the corner route on the right side to be well covered, so key the underneath hitch and drag combo instead. Man coverage with linebackers matched up on the drag routes is the best way to shut this down, especially if there is no natural pick or rub to create separation. Blitzes that bring extra rushers off the edge can be countered quickly since the underneath spacing routes get the ball out fast, so look for a hot route adjustment on the drag if a nano blitz is showing pre-snap.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing a two high or one high safety shell since this play is designed to exploit the soft underneath zones in Cover 3 and Cover 4.
Start your read on the drag route coming across the middle since it settles into the void behind linebackers and in front of deep zone defenders, giving you a quick, safe completion.
If the defense shows man coverage instead, hot route the shallow drag into a speed out or slant to avoid trailing defenders sitting on the crossing route.
Use this play on early downs to keep the offense on schedule, then pair it with PA Boot Slide or PA Weak Flood from the same set to threaten the same zone landmarks off play-action once the defense starts jumping the underneath routes.
Mix in Stick from this set as a quicker, tighter spacing concept to counter aggressive linebacker drops that clog the drag lanes on Dragon Spacing.
