PA Weak Flood is a play-action pass out of Singleback Doubles Y Off Close that floods the weak side of the field with three levels of routes stacked on top of each other. The outside receiver runs a deep comeback breaking back toward the sideline, the slot runs a corner route up and over the top, and the TE releases underneath on a shallow drag to the flat, while the backside X on the play side runs a deep vertical up the numbers as the clear-out. Play-action fakes a handoff to hold the linebackers, and the primary read progression works high to low: check the deep comeback first, then the corner route, then settle for the underneath flat route if the defense sits on the deep stuff. This is a Cover 3 beater designed to attack the flat defender and hole defender with a true triangle read.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single-high safety looks since this flood concept overloads the boundary and is a nightmare for a lone deep defender to cover three levels. Watch the flat defender or hole player after the snap. If they widen with the TE drag, the corner route behind them will be wide open for a big gap. Zone drops with a Cover 3 shell that keep the corner sitting deep and outside are the biggest liability since the comeback route settles right into that soft spot behind the cornerback. User-controlled defenders sitting in the passing lanes as a lurking safety can jump the corner route, so quarterbacks need to hold that read and check down to the flat if the lurk defender bites. Man coverage with press at the line disrupts the timing of the comeback and corner routes, and a well-timed blitz off the edge can beat the play-action fake before routes fully develop, so watch for overload blitz packages on early downs.
Usage Tips
Look for single-high safety shells pre-snap since this concept is built to punish Cover 3 and other zone drops that leave a soft flat area.
Use the play-action fake to freeze linebackers on early down and distance, ideally 2nd and short to 2nd and medium when defenses are more likely to bite on the run fake.
If you diagnose man coverage pre-snap, hot route the TE flat route into a quick option or speed it up since the comeback and corner routes can get taken away by press man on the outside.
Pair this play with HB Dive or Inside Zone Split earlier in a drive to set up the play-action fake and get linebackers flowing downhill before dialing up PA Weak Flood.
Combine with PA Boot Slide or PA Deep Out later in the same drive so the defense cannot key on formation tendencies, since all three share the same play-action shell but attack different levels.
