PA Deep Out is a play-action shot play out of Singleback Doubles Y Off Close that uses a play fake to hold the linebackers before attacking the perimeter and boundary. Off the play fake, the backside receiver runs a deep out that snaps hard to the sideline, while the two receivers to the strong side stack a deep crosser over an underneath drag to occupy zone defenders and clear space. The primary read is the deep out on the backside since it is isolated on one defender in space, with the crossing route underneath serving as the checkdown if the out is capped by a corner sitting on it or a cover 2 shell rotating over the top.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the corner over the deep out receiver is playing off man or sitting in a zone shell since off man leaves the out route vulnerable to a quick break. Watch the safety rotation after the snap, if a safety rotates down to help over the deep out that signals cover 3 or cover 4 and you should look to the crossing route instead. This play struggles against aggressive cover 2 with a hard flat defender since that defender can undercut the deep out before the quarterback can deliver it. User the deep third defender or the flat corner if you are on defense to bait the quarterback into throwing the out route, then close on the throw as it develops. Man blitzes with no deep help get exposed by this play since the play fake occupies the underneath defenders long enough for the deep out to separate before the corner can recover.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or second and medium when the defense is likely to respect the run fake and bite on linebacker flow.

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep the deep out is going to be a tighter throw so be ready to layer it in before the corner can flatten his drop.

Against man coverage, target the deep out as soon as the receiver breaks outside since the play action fake creates natural separation from the leverage of the defender.

Pair this call with HB Slam or HB Dive earlier in a series to sell the run fake, then dial up PA Deep Out once the defense starts keying on the run action.

If the corner jumps the deep out route, come back to the underneath crosser on the strong side since it will be open in the void created by the linebackers biting on the play fake.
