Breakdown

Slot Cross out of Singleback Doubles Flex is a pure dropback passing concept built around a deep crossing route. The slot receiver runs a dig-to-crosser that stems upfield before breaking hard across the middle of the field, while both outside receivers push vertical up the numbers to clear out cornerbacks and occupy deep coverage. The single back stays in to check release then works a flat/scat route away from the crosser, giving the quarterback a built-in outlet against a blitz. This is a man beater first and foremost: the crosser creates natural separation against man coverage by running defenders into traffic, and the vertical routes on the outside stretch zone defenders if the defense sits in a cover 2 or cover 3 shell. Primary read progression starts with the crossing route working from the slot, then works to the vertical route on the same side if the crosser is taken away, and checks down to the running back in the flat as the last resort.

Defensive Reads

Presnap, check safety depth and alignment. A single high safety means the crosser has a clean runway across the field with only one deep defender to rally. Watch the slot cornerback or nickel defender leverage before the snap. If he is playing outside shade, the crosser will have an easier time breaking inside for separation. Postsnap, key on linebacker drops in the middle of the field. A spy or a linebacker sitting in the hole can jump the crossing route and turn it into a pick six, so quarterbacks need to see that lurk defender before releasing the ball. Watch for man coverage traits like receivers being trailed step for step versus zone defenders opening their hips and reading the quarterback, since this route concept struggles against a well timed cover 3 sink where a deep defender can rob the crosser. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge are neutralized by the running back check release into the flat, so defenses need to disguise pressure to prevent an easy checkdown.

Usage Tips

Attack this play on early downs or third and medium when you expect man coverage, since the crosser is designed to win against man-to-man leverage. Presnap, identify if the defense is showing single high safety or two high shell. Against single high, expect the crosser to have room to work because there is only one deep defender to help over the top. Against two high shells, be ready to check the ball down quickly to the flat route since the crosser will run into a lurking underneath defender. Hot route the running back to a quick out or flat if you anticipate a blitz, giving the quarterback an immediate release valve. Combine this play with Y Shallow Cross or Inside Cross in the same set to keep the defense guessing between shallow and deep crossing concepts, forcing linebackers to widen their drops and opening up the vertical shots on the outside. Use motion presnap on the outside receiver to identify man versus zone before the snap, then confirm with the linebacker shift once the ball is snapped.
