HB Blunt Dive is a straightforward downhill run play out of Singleback Doubles Flex with 11 personnel. The diagram shows the HB aligned deep behind the QB, taking a quick handoff and hitting the inside gap immediately with no lead blocker or misdirection, while the offensive line fires out for a standard interior blocking scheme and both receivers plus the TE run off vertical routes to occupy defenders. This is a base run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression for the runner is to identify the first open crease at the point of attack (A or B gap) before bouncing outside if the interior is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap: stacked or crashing linebackers signal a run blitz that can beat this play before it develops. Identify single-high versus two-high safety shells, a single-high look often means an extra run defender near the box, which hurts this play's inside lanes. Nano blitzes and interior stunts from the defensive line are the biggest threat to Blunt Dive since there is no lead blocker to absorb penetration. If the user controls a linebacker and sits in the hole pre-snap, expect the dive lane to be taken away, so be ready to bounce the run outside. This play struggles against gap-control defenses and heavy box fronts but can pick up consistent yards versus base 4-3 or 3-4 looks with light boxes.
Usage Tips
Use HB Blunt Dive on early downs in run-heavy sequences to keep defenses honest against your play-action and RPO calls out of the same Doubles Flex look.
Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense shows six or more defenders in the box, consider audibling to a perimeter run or quick pass instead.
Since this is a north-south dive with no lead blocker, attack the play right after the snap rather than dancing behind the line, especially against aggressive defensive tackles who shoot gaps.
