Breakdown

PA Dbl Posts is a play-action shot play out of Singleback Doubles Flex that sells the run fake before attacking the middle of the field with two post routes. The backside receiver runs a deep post from the outside while the slot receiver crosses underneath on a shallow drag that clears space, and the playside receiver breaks inside on a post of his own after selling vertical, with the TE working an outlet route in the flat off the play-action boot. The primary read starts with the deep post to the opposite side, then works down to the second post, and checks down to the flat route if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Key the free safety at the snap, since this play is designed to attack single high shells where the post routes split the safety and force a difficult choice. Watch for Cover 3 or Cover 1 defenses biting on the play-action fake, which opens up the deep post before the safety can recover. If the defense shows two deep safeties pre-snap in Cover 2 or Cover 4, the post routes will be squeezed and the quarterback should progress quickly to the flat outlet. User the middle linebacker or a rover defender to sit in the passing lane of the shallow crosser, since that route often bait quarterbacks into a tipped pass. Disguised blitzes from the second level can disrupt the play-action timing, so watch linebacker depth pre-snap for signs of a run blitz that turns into man coverage on the posts.

Usage Tips

Use this out of shots or play-action heavy sequences after you have established the run with HB Power O or HB Blunt Dive so linebackers step up on the fake.

Check pre-snap for two deep safeties, since single high alignments can rob the post routes if the free safety reads the play-action quickly.

Hot route the underneath crosser into a deeper dig if you are facing zone coverage to give yourself an extra window between the linebacker levels.

This pairs well with Four Verticals in your play-calling sequence, since defenses that start jumping the posts will get burned by the vertical stems on later downs.

Best called on second and medium to second and long when defenses are more willing to sit in zone shells and bite on the run action.
