HB Dive Z Motion is a straight downhill run play out of Singleback Doubles Flex that uses Z motion across the formation pre-snap to shift defensive alignment and identify man versus zone coverage before the snap. The diagram shows the HB running a direct dive path through the A gap behind the fullback and offensive line, with the interior line blocking down to seal running lanes for a quick, north-south hit. This is a base run play designed to attack light boxes or overloaded coverage shells after the Z motion pulls a defender out of the box, so the primary read is the play-side A gap first, bouncing to the B gap if the nose or defensive tackle penetrates.
Watch for linebackers cheating downhill immediately after the snap, which signals they read run and are flowing hard to the A gap. Key the Z motion defender pre-snap, if a linebacker or slot corner follows across the formation it confirms man coverage and often pulls a body out of the run fit. Look for a stacked box with eight or more defenders after the motion settles, which is the biggest indicator this dive gets stuffed at the line. User the Mike linebacker or a safety down in the box to fill the A gap quickly, since the play design counts on that gap being clean before defenders react. Beware of a hard crash from the defensive tackle or nose, since interior penetration is the fastest way to blow up this run before the fullback can seal his block.
Use the Z motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into following the receiver, which can tell you if you are facing man coverage if a defender trails the motion across the formation.
Run this play on early downs like first or second and short when the defense is showing base personnel or light box counts of six or fewer defenders.
If the defense shifts into a heavy box after the motion, consider audibling to HB Power O or HB Stretch to attack the edges instead of forcing the dive into extra bodies.
Pair this play in sequence with HB Draw and HB Slip Screen from the same set to keep linebackers honest and slow their run fits after they see the same personnel and motion look repeatedly.
Take the direct A gap hit as soon as the fullback and guard seal their blocks rather than trying to make defenders miss, since dive plays are built for quick, decisive north-south burst.
