Double Slants lines up out of Singleback Doubles Flex with 11 personnel, and the diagram shows a true trips look to one side with two slants stacked underneath a third receiver breaking on a deeper angle route. On the backside, the isolated X receiver runs a slant from the boundary while the other two receivers from the trips side sit on short slant routes that cross the formation horizontally. This is a quick game man beater built around natural picks and rubs, with the primary read progression starting on the backside isolated slant against man coverage, then working to the trips side slants underneath if the defense rotates to double the single receiver.
Pre snap check safety depth, if both safeties are deep and the corners are playing tight man without help this play is a green light against man coverage. Watch for a linebacker or slot defender sitting in the shallow hook zone on the trips side, that defender can undercut the underneath slant if he reads the quarterback's eyes quickly. Key the backside cornerback's leverage, outside shade means the slant window is open, inside shade means the receiver needs a hot route adjustment to an out route. Recognize Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with corners sinking into deep zones, this concept struggles against those shells since the underneath defenders can sit on the short crossing routes. Identify blitz packages pre snap by counting box defenders, if the defense brings extra rushers the quick slant concept is designed to get the ball out before the pressure disrupts the timing, so trust the first open read.
Presnap identify whether the defense is showing man or zone by checking corner alignment on the isolated backside receiver, if he is pressed or tight without safety help throw the backside slant immediately on the snap.
Use this play on obvious passing downs like third and short to third and medium where the quick horizontal stretch of the slants beats blitz packages before pressure arrives.
Hot route the backside single receiver to a quick out if you see a hard inside shade from the corner, this gives you a leverage counter against aggressive man defenders trying to jump the slant.
Pair this play with Slants or Slot Cross from the same set to keep the defense guessing on whether the quick game concept is coming from the boundary or the trips side.
Against zone shells with linebackers sitting in the shallow hook zones, look to layer the throw over the second level and lead your receiver away from the closing zone defender rather than throwing a flat trajectory.
