Breakdown
Whip Ins lines up out of Singleback Doubles Flex with two receivers stacked to the left and a tight end/receiver combo to the right. The left side runs a vertical clear and a whip route that breaks back inside underneath, while the right side has the outside receiver on a deep in route and the inline man on a shallow drag toward the sideline. This is a man beater built to attack leverage: the whip route uses a stutter-and-break to shake off man coverage low, while the deep in on the opposite side gives you a zone beater window against off coverage or Tampa 2 shells. Primary read starts with the whip route breaking inside, then works to the deep in route on the backside if the middle is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flat defender and underneath linebacker to the whip route side pre-snap, since a shaded outside linebacker or nickel corner sitting tight can jump the whip's break and blow up the primary read. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest vulnerability, the whip route's stutter move creates instant separation against press or tight man technique. Zone defenses that keep a linebacker spying the shallow drag or dropping into the underneath hook zone can take away the checkdown, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball longer. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender on the whip side can undercut the route, so look for corners sinking early into the flat as a pre-snap tell. If the deep in route runner is bracketed by a corner and safety in a two-man look, the play loses its backside answer and the whip route becomes the only viable read.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the corner over your whip route is playing tight man or sitting off in a soft shell, since the whip route's break depends on creating separation at the top of its stem.
If you see two-high safeties rotating late, favor the deep in route on the backside since that route sits in the honey hole against Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells.
Use the shallow drag from the inline receiver as a hot route checkdown against blitz looks, especially when the defense shows five or six defenders in the box pre-snap.
Pair this play with Slot Cross or Inside Cross in the same set so the defense has to respect crossing traffic underneath, which opens up the whip route's break even more.
Best called on second or third down in the 5 to 8 yard range since the whip route's depth and break point are designed to convert medium distance situations.
