HB Power O out of Singleback Doubles Flex is a gap-scheme run play built to pull a blocker across the formation and create a numbers advantage at the point of attack. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking down while the HB takes a slight lead step before receiving the handoff and attacking the hole behind the pulling guard, with the QB stepping back to hand off rather than run a play-action or RPO look. This is a pure downhill run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing game sense, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the play side hole, read the pulling blocker's kick out or lead block, and decide between bouncing outside or cutting back based on how the defensive front flows.
Look for a light box pre-snap with six or fewer defenders in the run fit, which tells you the pulling guard should have a clean path to the second level. Watch linebacker depth and gap alignment before the snap, since linebackers stacked tight to the line can beat the pulling blocker to the hole and blow up the play. If the defense shows an overload blitz or a nano blitz look with extra rushers crashing the play side gap immediately, this run gets stopped for a loss and you should audible out. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and linebacker flow. If they squeeze down hard and get skinny, that tells the ball carrier to bounce it outside the pulling guard's kick out block. User-controlled defenders shooting the backside cutback lane can erase this run, so if you see a defender spying the backside gap pre-snap, expect a cutback shutdown and lean on the cutback read instead of forcing it play side.
Run this play against base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts where the defense has not loaded the box with extra defenders, since the pulling guard needs room to work.
Check the pre-snap alignment of the linebackers and if you see them cheating toward the play side gap, consider using motion or checking to HB Blunt Dive to attack the opposite side.
Use HB Power O early in a series to establish downhill run credibility, then pair it with PA Y Glance or PA HB Curl later in the same drive to punish linebackers who start crashing down on run fakes.
On the stick, patiently press the hole and let the pulling lineman get to his landmark before committing to the crease, since bailing too early kills the blocking scheme.
This play is best on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when you want positive yardage without exposing yourself to a bad matchup on 3rd and long.
