Breakdown

Double Outs is a route concept out of Singleback Doubles Flex 11 personnel built to attack the sideline with hard breaking out routes at multiple levels. To the boundary side, the outside receiver runs a deep vertical up the numbers before breaking hard outside on a corner style out, while the inside slot receiver runs a shorter out breaking underneath toward the same sideline, stacking two out breaking routes at different depths. On the field side, the two receivers work an over route and a shallow out crossing underneath, giving the quarterback a horizontal stretch away from the trips side, and the running back releases on a shallow angle route out of the backfield as a check down or man beater against a blitzing linebacker. This is a pass play, not play action or an RPO, and the primary read progression starts with the deep out to the flexed receiver, works down to the underneath out, then bounces to the backfield angle route if the sideline reads are covered.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and corner alignment to the boundary side, since press or off man corners without deep help are vulnerable to the deep out route breaking to the sideline. Watch for a user controlled linebacker or safety sitting in the flat or hook zone, as this defender can undercut both the underneath out and the backfield angle route if he reads the quarterback's eyes. Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with corners sitting on the deep outs will force the quarterback to work the shallow crossing routes and the angle route instead, so identify two deep safety looks pre-snap. Post-snap, key the flat defender's drop and depth, since a shallow flat defender who widens late can still close on the underneath out route and force a tighter throwing window. Watch for overload blitzes from the field side, since the running back must be ready to help in protection before releasing on the angle route, and a free rusher off the edge will collapse this play quickly.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a hot route check to identify if you are getting man or zone coverage before the snap, since the deep out route is a premium man beater against off coverage corners.

Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, prioritize the underneath out from the slot receiver and the backfield angle route, since those routes sit in soft spots between the flat defender and the linebacker level.

This play works best on second and medium to long or third and medium situations where the sideline breaking routes have room to work and the quarterback has time to hit the deep out.

Pair this play with HB Dive or HB Blunt Dive earlier in a drive to get linebackers to bite downhill, which opens up the angle route out of the backfield for a big gain against overaggressive run defense.

If the defense starts jumping the deep out route with a user controlled defender, sequence into Slants or Double Slants from this same set to attack the same coverage with quicker inside breaking concepts.
