Four Verticals out of Singleback Doubles Flex sends all four eligible receivers vertically up the field, with both outside receivers running straight seams and the slot receiver and TE also releasing vertically from the bunched inline alignment. The HB stays in to help protect or checks release underneath, giving the QB a clean pocket to read the field from outside in. This is a classic zone beater designed to stress Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells by overloading the deep zones with four vertical stems, and the primary read progression starts with the seams before working to the numbers based on safety rotation.
Identify two deep safeties pre-snap as a sign of Cover 2 or Cover 4, which forces the seam routes to split the underneath linebackers and the deep safeties. Watch for a single high safety showing Cover 3, since the deep middle route can walk into the vacated seam if the safety bites on an outside vertical. Key the linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers who sink into the seams can disrupt the inside vertical routes and force you to check the ball down. Look for user controlled defenders sitting in the passing lanes or lurking near the seams, since a smart defender can rob the inside verticals and bait you into a turnover. This play struggles against Cover 4 quarters coverage with disciplined corners and safeties who stay on top of the routes, and it can get shut down by well timed zone blitzes that drop extra defenders into the deep seams.
Check the pre-snap safety alignment before the snap, two deep safeties usually means Cover 2 or Cover 4 and you want to attack the seams between the corner and safety. Against single high safety looks like Cover 3, target the deep middle seam route since the free safety cannot cover the entire width of the field. Hot route the HB into a flat or option route if the defense shows heavy pressure looks, since this gives you a checkdown against blitz-heavy fronts. Use this play on third and long or two minute drill situations when you need explosive plays and are willing to live with the sack risk from a slower developing four man vertical concept. Pair this with Slants or Curl Flats from the same set to keep the defense honest on shorter routes before hitting them with Four Verticals once they start jumping underneath throws.
