Breakdown

HB Slam is a downhill dive run out of Singleback Doubles Flex 11 personnel, with the HB aligned in the backfield taking a quick handoff and slamming straight into the line behind the interior blocking surface. The diagram shows a tight, condensed run blocking scheme with the offensive line working double teams and combo blocks up front to seal the point of attack, while the two outside receivers and slot run off vertical releases to occupy the corners and take defenders out of the box. The primary read progression starts with the HB reading the initial double team at the point of attack, then bouncing to whichever gap opens based on the flow of the linebackers.

Defensive Reads

Look for linebacker depth pre snap, since linebackers sitting close to the line signal they are keying the run and will fill gaps fast. Identify whether the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 front, since heavier fronts with extra defenders in the box will clog the interior gaps HB Slam is designed to hit. Watch for a Mike linebacker blitz or a nano blitz through the A gap, since that defender arrives too fast for the offensive line to seal and kills the play before it develops. Check safety alignment, since a safety creeping down into the box pre snap indicates run support and a stacked front that neutralizes this play. Post snap, track whether the double team at the point of attack gets immediate movement, since a stalemate at the line means the HB has no lane and should cut away from pursuit rather than force it upfield.

Usage Tips

Use HB Slam on early downs like first and ten or second and short when you need a north south gain against light boxes. Check the defensive front pre snap and look for six or fewer defenders in the box before calling this play, since it loses value against stacked eight man fronts. Pair HB Slam with HB Dive and HB Blunt Dive in the same set to keep the defense guessing on which gap you are attacking, since all three look nearly identical at the snap. Use motion or shifts pre snap to bait linebackers into showing blitz or run fits, then snap the ball once you identify a favorable box count. Sequence this play early in a series to set up PA HB Curl or PA Deep In later, since defenses that bite hard on the dive open up play action lanes behind them.
