Slot Post out of Singleback Doubles Flex sends the slot receiver on a hard post that breaks across the middle of the field as the primary route, with the outside receiver to that side running a go route to clear the deep half. On the opposite side the flanker runs a corner route while the tight end or third receiver runs a shallow drag underneath, and the running back releases into a check release flat route to the sideline as the outlet. This is a man beater built to attack single high shells and off man coverage, with the post designed to split the safety and the hole defender while the go route occupies the corner over the top.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, locate the free safety and determine if he is aligned in the middle of the field or shaded to a side, since a true single high alignment tells you the post has a clear throwing lane. Check cornerback depth on the slot receiver, tight press man coverage forces the post to fight through contact while soft coverage gives an easy angle to break inside. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker or user controlled defender dropping into the deep middle hook zone, since a well timed drop or lurk can undercut the post route before it clears traffic. Watch for two high safeties staying deep, which signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and takes away the post as a viable read, forcing the quarterback to the corner or flat instead. Look for blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the running back's flat route becomes the checkdown against pressure while the post continues to develop downfield.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the safety is rotating to single high or staying two high, since the post only has room to work versus one deep defender. If you see two high safeties, look to the corner route or the flat route to the running back instead of forcing the post into double coverage. Hot route the shallow drag into a spot or hook route versus zone heavy looks if the middle linebacker is sitting in the throwing lane. This play works best on second and medium or first down when defenses are more likely to play base coverage rather than dropping extra defenders into the deep middle. Pair this play with Four Verticals and PA Dbl Posts from the same set so the defense has to respect the deep middle on every snap, then come back with Curl Flats or HB Draw to keep the defense from selling out on the post.
