Breakdown

Inside Cross out of Singleback Doubles Flex is a man beater built around a deep crossing route that picks its way through traffic from the backside of the formation. The near slot runs a crosser underneath that clears left to right across the field, the outside receiver on that side pushes vertical up the seam and breaks toward the corner, and the backside X runs a corner route while the running back releases up the middle on a check release. The primary read starts with the crossing route working man leverage across the field, then progresses to the deep corner breaking route if the crosser gets picked up, with the check release backfield route as a late-down safety valve against pressure.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify press man coverage on the outside receivers and a single high safety shell, since this play thrives when defenders are locked in man with no help over the top on the crossing route. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow in a hook zone he can undercut the crosser, which signals the quarterback should reset to the corner route. As the user defender, sit in a lurk position over the middle to jump the crossing route timing, since this route is designed to run through traffic and is vulnerable to a well timed break on the ball. Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells with disciplined linebackers sinking into the crosser's lane can shut this play down by taking away both the shallow crosser and forcing the quarterback into a tighter window on the corner route. Bring pressure off the edge or up the middle to collapse the pocket quickly, since the crosser takes time to develop and a fast blitz can force an early, inaccurate throw before the route fully clears.

Usage Tips

Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as corners lined up tight on receivers with no safety help rotating over the top before committing to the crosser as your first read.

Use motion or a quick glance at the middle linebacker depth to confirm if he is sitting in a hook zone that could jump the crossing route, and if so, work your eyes immediately to the corner route on the backside.

Hot route the running back into a flat route or keep him on the check release depending on whether you need an extra blocker against a four man rush or an extra outlet against a blitz.

This play pairs well with Slot Cross or Y Shallow Cross in your play-calling sequence since the mirrored crossing action forces linebackers to guess which way to flow, opening up explosive gains once they bite on the wrong route.

Best called on second and medium or third and long situations where the defense is likely to sit in man coverage and the deep corner route can be a chunk play if the safety cheats toward the crosser.
