Breakdown

PA Dagger from Shotgun Tight Flex Wk is a play-action shot play built around the classic dagger combo on the backside. The play fakes the handoff to sell run action, then the outside receiver on that side clears vertically deep while the inside slot receiver settles into a dig underneath him, creating a natural high-low seam read. On the other side of the formation, the receiver runs a deep corner route stretching that half of the field, while the inline receiver near the core runs a quick out to occupy underneath defenders. Blocking is play-action pass protection with the backfield selling run fake before the QB works the dagger side first, reading the vertical clear-out to the dig underneath, with the corner route as the alternate outlet against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Identify two deep safeties pre-snap, this usually means Cover 2 or Cover 4 and tells you the dig route sitting underneath the vertical clear-out will be open in the intermediate window. A single high safety pre-snap signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, prioritize the corner route on the backside since it attacks the deep third or wins in man coverage against a trailing corner. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard on the play-action fake they will struggle to get back to the dig route, giving the QB a clean throwing lane. Beware of a user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, this is the primary defender who can jump the dig route and bait a pick six if the QB does not fully sell the run fake. Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the corner route side is where this play hits hardest, but disciplined zone drops from a Cover 4 shell with corners playing outside leverage can take away both the dig and the corner simultaneously.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, two deep safeties tip Cover 2 or Cover 4 which sets up the dig route to sit in the soft spot behind the linebackers and in front of the safeties.

If you see a single deep safety, expect Cover 3 or Cover 1, and the corner route on the opposite side becomes your best answer since it splits the deep third or beats man coverage over the top.

Use play-action rollout timing to your advantage, hold the fake just long enough to let linebackers bite before resetting your eyes to the dagger side.

Hot route the flat receiver into a quick option or drag if the defense shows a heavy underneath blitz look, this gives you a fast release valve against nano blitzes.

Pair this play with Mtn Stick Z Post or Mtn Y Cross in your play-calling sequence, since both hold safeties and linebackers similarly on early downs, then hit PA Dagger later to attack the same look with a shot play.
