Inside Zone out of Shotgun Tight Flex Wk is a pure zone run play with the HB aligned offset in the backfield next to the QB. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, stepping in unison to the play side to create combo blocks at the point of attack and seal off backside pursuit. The primary read progression for the ball carrier starts at the play side A gap, working through the B gap, and bouncing outside if the front is overloaded, letting the HB press the line and read the double team blocks before cutting off the first sign of daylight.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the linebacker depth and box count since Inside Zone struggles against 7 or 8 man fronts with downhill linebackers reading run keys immediately. Watch for user-controlled defensive tackles crashing hard into a gap, since a disciplined interior rush can blow up the combo blocks before the HB gets to the line. Check safety alignment for a run blitz look, since a safety creeping down pre-snap into the box signals an overload to the play side that should be countered by bouncing the run outside. Post-snap, look for linebackers flowing too fast to the play side, which opens a natural cutback lane behind the zone blocking scheme. This run gets shut down hard against interior nano blitzes and 46 style fronts, so if you see a heavy interior stack pre-snap, be ready to check to a different play rather than force the zone run into a losing numbers battle.
Usage Tips
Run this out of 11 personnel on early downs when the defense shows base personnel to keep the box light and avoid loaded fronts.
Check the defensive line alignment pre-snap and if you see a 4 or 5 tech shaded away from the call side, this becomes an easy conversion since the zone flow naturally opens that lane.
Use pre-snap motion sparingly here since Tight Flex Wk already creates natural spacing, but if the defense shows blitz or stacks the box, consider audibling to Mtn Bunch HB Draw for a similar look with a delayed hit.
Pair this play with PA Dagger from the same set once you have established Inside Zone as a tendency, since the play-action rollout off the same run action will freeze linebackers who key the zone steps.
On third and short or goal line packages, trust the zone combo blocks up front and stay patient behind the line before committing to a lane, since early cuts against a stacked front often get you dropped for a loss.
