Cheat Bunch HB Draw is a delayed run play designed to bait aggressive pass rushers and blitz-happy defenses out of their gaps before the HB attacks downhill. The bunch look with pre-snap motion disguises the run action, holding linebackers with play-action-style pass rush steps while the offensive line sells pass protection before engaging in run blocks. The primary read progression is patience: let the initial rush develop, identify the widened cutback lane created by overpursuing defenders, and hit the crease as soon as the blocking wall forms.
Watch for defensive ends and edge rushers crashing hard upfield, since overaggressive rush lanes open the cutback for the HB. Zone blitz shells with a spy or contain defender at linebacker depth are the biggest counter to this play. Check the middle linebacker depth pre-snap, if he is sitting shallow reading the backfield he can blow up the draw before it develops. Man coverage with off-ball linebackers biting on the play-action rush is where this play hits hardest. User-controlled defenders staying home in the box instead of dropping into coverage will shut down the cutback lane quickly.
Use pre-snap motion to bait linebackers into flowing or shifting their gap responsibility before the snap.
This play thrives against man coverage blitzes and aggressive nano blitz packages that send extra rushers upfield too fast.
Hold the HB behind the line an extra beat to let the draw fully develop instead of forcing it into a clogged lane.
Call this on early downs after establishing Inside Zone or Mesh Spot Rail so the defense respects the pass look from Tight Flex Wk.
Pair with Mtn Bunch Drive or PA Dagger in a sequence to keep defenders guessing between quick game and delayed run concepts.
