Mtn Y Cross runs out of Shotgun Tight Flex Wk with a full man motion sweeping across the formation before the snap. Post-snap, the Y (tight end) runs a deep crossing route from the strong side all the way across the field, working underneath a corner route breaking toward the sideline, while the backside receiver runs an out and up combo and the motion man releases vertically up the numbers. The back releases into a flat/checkdown route underneath everything. This is a man beater at its core: the deep crosser creates natural separation against man defenders trapped in coverage, while the flat route and vertical stretch give you answers versus zone drops. Primary progression is Y crosser first, corner route on the vertical breakout second, backside vertical third, with the flat route as the checkdown valve.
Watch the motion defender pre-snap: if a linebacker or safety runs with the motion man across the formation, you are almost certainly facing man coverage and the crosser is live. Check safety depth before the snap since two deep safeties signal zone coverage where the flat route and vertical stretch become more valuable than the crosser. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker or nickel defender's drop, if he sinks deep into the crosser's lane you have a zone shell like Cover 3 or Cover 4 that can undercut the route. Cover 2 with a jamming corner at the line can disrupt the timing of the vertical breakout route, so look for that press alignment pre-snap. This concept struggles against a well-timed nano blitz up the middle since the crosser needs time to develop, so respect delayed interior pressure and get to your checkdown quickly if you see extra rushers crashing the pocket.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone: if the defender follows the motion man across the formation, you are getting man coverage and the Y crosser is going to win versus a chasing linebacker or safety. Hot route the flat route to a drag or spot if you are seeing a linebacker sitting in the shallow zone with sticky eyes on your crosser. This play excels on second and medium to third and short because the crosser and flat route combo give you multiple options short of the sticks. Pair this with Mtn Stick Z Post or PA Dagger in your play-calling sequence since both show similar motion and formation, forcing the defense to respect the vertical shot before you come back to this crosser. Against aggressive user blitzers, get the ball out on the flat route quickly since the crosser takes time to develop and can get muddied by a spy or delayed blitzer sitting underneath.
