Go Y-Choice out of Shotgun Tight Flex Wk sends the Y (TE) on a choice route where he reads the leverage of the underneath defender and breaks in or out, while the two outside receivers push vertical on go routes to stretch the deep coverage. This concept is built primarily as a man beater since the Y-Choice route thrives off winning one on one leverage against a linebacker or safety in man coverage, though it also has zone beater traits versus soft zone shells where the TE can settle into the void. The primary read progression starts with the Y-Choice as the hot read against man coverage or underneath zone leverage, then works to the streaking outside receivers if the safety bites down or the coverage rolls away from the vertical shots.

Defensive Reads

Presnap, check safety depth and corner alignment since press man or man match coverage with a linebacker on the TE is the ideal matchup for the Y-Choice break. Post snap, watch for a user controlled defender dropping into a lurk spot near the TE breakpoint, since a smart user will sit on the Y-Choice route and bait the throw. Cover 2 with hard flat defenders can jump the shorter break on the choice route, so be ready to layer the throw or move to the outside go routes if the corners squat. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers up the middle can open a natural void for the TE if he is running a shallow settle read against zone, so climb the pocket and deliver quickly before the interior pressure arrives. Versus Cover 3 with a deep half rotation, the outside go routes can win against a single high safety who has to choose which vertical threat to help on, so trust the go route matchup on the boundary corner.

Usage Tips

Presnap, identify whether the defense is showing two high safeties or a single high shell because Go Y-Choice is most explosive when you diagnose man coverage and can immediately key the Y-Choice matchup against a linebacker or slower safety.

If you see Cover 3 or Cover 4 with hard outside corners, hot route the Y-Choice to sit down as a settle route against zone instead of breaking hard, turning it into more of a zone beater against the underneath defenders.

Use this play on early downs or in second and medium situations where you can take the shot on the outside go routes if the safety cheats up to take away the TE.

Pair this with Mtn Y Cross or Mtn Stick Z Post from the same set to keep the defense guessing between a TE breaking route and a TE crossing route, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their initial key.

Sequence this after running HB Slip Screen or Inside Zone earlier in the drive to get linebackers creeping forward, then hit the Y-Choice or go routes over the top when they overcommit to run support.
