Breakdown

Bench out of Shotgun Tight Flex Wk is a classic Bench concept built to attack sideline zones and stretch corners horizontally. Both outside receivers run flat routes breaking hard to the sideline while the two inside receivers (slot and TE) push vertical stems into corner routes toward the numbers, creating a natural high low stretch on each side of the field. The HB releases up the middle on a check release or seam option, giving the quarterback a fourth read if the flats and corners are covered. Primary progression starts with the corner route to the play side, works down to the flat, then crosses the field to the opposite corner and flat combo if the play side is taken away.

Defensive Reads

Identify two high safeties pre-snap since Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells struggle to defend the flat to corner stretch on both sides of the field. Watch the flat defenders at the snap, if they widen with the flat route the corner route window opens behind them for an easy pitch and catch. Key on the middle linebacker depth, if he sits shallow to jump underneath routes the HB seam or check release becomes a big play opportunity up the middle. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender and a deep third corner can take away both the flat and the corner on one side, forcing the quarterback to work the backside combo. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed on the corner routes since the receiver breaks away from trailing defenders, but disguised zone blitzes with a spy on the HB can shut down the checkdown option.

Usage Tips

Read the flat defender pre-snap to determine if you are facing zone or man, since this concept eats up Cover 2 and Cover 3 flat defenders who cannot cover both the corner and the flat. Use this on 2nd or 3rd and medium to long since the corner routes need room to develop vertically before breaking outside. If you see man coverage, hot route the HB from a check release into a wheel route to exploit a linebacker who cannot stay in phase. Pair this play with Mtn Bunch Switch Flood or Mtn Y Cross in your play calling sequence to keep defenders guessing between bunch flood concepts and this two by two Bench stretch. Against aggressive user blitzers, throw the flat route quickly as a hot read since the sideline routes come open fast against overloaded fronts.
