HB Slip Screen out of Shotgun Tight Flex Wk is a classic screen play designed to bait aggressive interior pass rushers and blitz-heavy defenses. The offensive line sells pass pro before releasing to set up a wall in front of the HB, who slips out of the backfield to the flat while receivers run vertical routes downfield to occupy the secondary. The primary read progression is simple: the HB is the first and only real target, so the QB should look to deliver the ball as soon as the running back clears the box and blockers get in front of him. This is a blitz beater and man beater at its core, exploiting defenders who key on the QB drop instead of respecting the backfield release.
Watch for defensive tackles and ends selling out on an inside rush, since that is exactly the trigger this screen wants to exploit. Key on linebacker depth at the snap: if they crash hard upfield or blitz through the A or B gap, the screen lane opens up immediately. User-controlled defenders who spy the backfield or sit on flat routes will blow this play up before the blockers can set the wall. Cover 2 and Cover 3 zone shells with disciplined linebackers who read backfield action tend to shut this down, since they keep outside contain and can rally to the ball. If you see a defensive lineman dropping into a zone or a linebacker sitting still instead of rushing, abort the screen mentally and expect minimal yardage, since the defense has diagnosed it pre-snap.
Call this play on early downs or after you have shown the defense a few dropback passes from this formation, since it plays off pass tendencies. Use it as a changeup after running Mtn Bunch HB Draw or Inside Zone to condition the defense into expecting run action or blitz opportunities from this personnel. Identify pre-snap blitz indicators like linebackers creeping to the line or a defensive coordinator showing Cover 0 or man press, since screens thrive against overaggressive pass rush. Avoid calling this against zone-heavy defenses that sit and read the QB, since defenders can sniff out the screen and jump the throwing lane. Pair this with Quick Looks or Stick in your play-calling sequence to keep the defense honest between quick game and screen concepts, and hot route the backside receiver on a quick out if you see a spy sitting near the screen side.
