Split Close is a 20 personnel Shotgun set that puts the fullback and halfback in a split backfield alignment next to the quarterback while the receivers align tight to the formation. Unlike the wider Shotgun sets that stretch the numbers with trips or spread looks, Split Close compresses the strong side so the tight end and slot are inside the hash, which puts defenders in conflict immediately after the snap. The two-back look forces the defense to respect the run gaps, and since both backs can release, you get five potential receivers out of a formation that reads like a run-first alignment pre-snap.
Use Split Close on second and medium or third and short where the defense has to honor the two-back run threat, then hit Mtn Y-fork or Z Spot behind the linebackers who are creeping downhill.
Read the flat defender pre-snap: if he widens with the compressed split, run Dig Slot Out or Pivot Dig inside him, and if he squats, take the sideline with Close Corner or Close HB Wheel.
Motion the fullback out of the backfield to identify man versus zone, then hot route him to a flat or slot cross depending on what the tag tells you.
Against heavy inside pressure, hot route one back to block and use the other on a swing so you always have an answer without abandoning the concept.
Pair HB Power O and HB Gut with PA F Slide from the same set so the play-action hits the exact linebacker level you have been punishing on the ground.
