Defensive Reads
Key the fullback's path immediately after the snap, his block determines which interior gap the play is designed to hit. Watch for linebackers reading run and flowing downhill fast, aggressive triggers from Mike and Will linebackers can blow this play up before the fullback gets a clean kick. This run struggles against stacked fronts with extra defenders in the box, since there is no second-level answer if gaps get clogged. Look for safeties staying home instead of biting on the vertical releases, disciplined two-high shells that hold their depth can rally down and limit the gain. Man coverage on the outside vertical routes with no safety help over the top is when this play hits hardest, since it pulls defenders away from the box entirely.
Usage Tips
Use this play on short yardage or first and ten situations when you need a north south gain without exposing yourself to a broken play in the passing game.
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box, be ready to bounce this play or check to something else in the set like HB Power O.
The two vertical releases on the outside hold safeties and corners, so this works best against light boxes or when the defense shows two high shells that suggest pass coverage over run support.
Pair this with Read Option or Triple Option Lt in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the dive and the edge, making linebacker fits harder to diagnose.
Avoid calling this into stacked fronts or heavy blitz packages since there is no quick outlet, commit to the fullback's lane and trust your blocking upfront.
