Mesh Spot out of Shotgun Split Close (20 personnel) gives you the classic mesh crossing combo paired with a spot concept to the closed side. The two inside receivers run a tight mesh underneath, crossing paths just past the line to rub off man defenders, while the outside receiver on that side runs a corner route up top. On the strong side, the tight end or slot runs a quick out to the flat with the outside receiver clearing vertical up the sideline, giving you a spot concept read of flat, corner, and mesh crossers underneath. This is a certified man beater thanks to the natural rub from the mesh, but it also holds up against zone thanks to the spot concept sitting defenders down and clearing lanes. Primary read progression starts with the mesh crossers underneath, works to the flat route for a quick option against blitz, then climbs to the corner route as the deep answer if the defense sits on the shorter stuff.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with tight press alignment on the outside receivers, since that is exactly what mesh is designed to exploit. Watch for a single high safety versus two high shell, as two high usually means more underneath help against the crossers and forces you to work the corner route instead. Post-snap, key any linebacker or safety sitting in a lurk position over the middle, since that defender is reading the mesh crossers and can jump the throw if you stare it down. If you see zone drops with defenders sinking hard to the flat, the mesh crossers will find soft grass in the middle voids created by the spot concept clearing out underneath zones. Beware disguised blitzes that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the mesh routes take time to develop and a fast pressure package can force a bad throw before the crossers separate.
Pre-snap, check for man coverage indicators like press corners or a single high safety shaded toward the strong side, since the mesh rub will shred man to man almost every time.
Hot route the corner route into a fade or streak if you see a rolled up cover 3 shell to stress the deep third defender and take away the sit-and-wait lurk defender.
Use this on second and medium to second and long, since the mesh crossers need a few beats to develop and you want a cushion if the first read is covered.
If the defense starts jumping the mesh crossers with a spy or lurk defender, sequence into Dig Y-out or Mtn Y-Flood from this same set to attack the flat and corner combo without tipping your hand.
Against aggressive blitz looks, check down to the flat route immediately since it is the fastest developing throw and beats most nano blitz pressure before it gets home.
