Breakdown

Swirl Curls is a Shotgun Split Close concept built around dual outside curls with a check release swirl underneath. Both outside receivers snap off curl routes at the boundary while the two backs from the backfield swirl into shallow crossing routes underneath, and the inline slot runs a deep post/dig read across the middle. This play beats zone coverage by settling the curls into the soft spots between the flat and hook defenders, while the underneath swirl gives you a built-in check down against man pressure. The primary read starts with the middle route breaking against the safety, then works to either curl based on which side the flat defender widens out of, and finishes with the underneath swirl as the outlet against a blitz.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the cornerback alignment on the outside receivers, if they are playing off coverage with outside leverage the curls will have room to sit down in the soft zone. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, a shallow drop signals underneath zone coverage that will jump the swirl routes, so widen your eyes to the curls instead. Identify any user-controlled defender flashing toward the middle route, that lurk threat can jump the crossing route and bait a turnover if you force that throw. Cover 3 with a hard-charging slot corner blitz is the biggest threat to this play since it removes a flat defender and speeds up the underneath window, so get the ball out on time to the near curl. Man coverage with a single high safety rolled to the passing strength will squeeze the curl routes, so counter by reading the swirl underneath as your immediate answer against pressure.

Usage Tips

Look at the safety depth pre-snap, if you see two high safeties sitting at 10-12 yards, expect zone drops that open up the curl sit spots at 12-15 yards.

Motion a receiver across the formation before the snap to help identify man versus zone, if the defender follows across the field it confirms man coverage and you should prioritize the underneath swirl routes as quick separation options.

Hot route the backside curl into a flat route against Cover 3 to stretch the flat defender horizontally and open a passing lane behind him.

This play works well on second and medium to third and short since the curls sit down quickly and give you a high floor completion against most zone shells.

Pair this with Double Swirl or Mesh Spot from the same set to keep the defense guessing between the curl sit concept and quicker underneath crossers, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops.
