Double Swirl lines up out of Shotgun Split Close with both outside receivers running quick out routes toward the sideline while the two inside slot receivers run slant routes underneath into the flat, creating a mirrored swirl concept to each side of the formation. This is a quick pass man beater built for immediate separation, using natural picks from the out and slant crossing paths to shake man defenders at the line. The primary read progression is quarterback works the pre-snap leverage to pick a side, then reads the out route first for the boundary throw before checking down to the underneath slant if the corner sits on the out.
Defensive Reads
Watch for press man coverage on the outside corners since this concept is designed to beat exactly that with quick out and slant leverage. Check safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties are deep and corners are in man with no underneath help, the out route wins immediately on the snap. Post-snap, identify if a linebacker or nickel defender is sitting in a lurk position underneath since that defender can jump the slant route and bait a pick. Zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with sitting corners can undercut the out route, so know that this play loses value against soft zone drops. If the defense shows a nano blitz or overload pressure pre-snap, expect the underneath slant to be the quicker answer since the out route takes longer to develop against pressure.
Usage Tips
Pick your side pre-snap based on which cornerback is playing tighter man leverage since the out route needs a cushion to work.
Use this on third and short or second and medium when defenses are likely to show man coverage with press corners.
If you see a blitz look pre-snap, hot route the slant receiver to a quick option or speed up your drop to get rid of the ball before the rush arrives.
Pair this with Swirl Curls or Z Spot later in a drive since the mirrored route action looks similar pre-snap but attacks zone leverage differently, keeping defenders guessing.
Against aggressive user linebackers jumping the flat, throw off the out route timing on time rather than waiting for the swirl to fully develop.
