Dig HB Rail lines up out of Shotgun Split Close with the HB releasing out of the backfield on a rail route up the sideline while the two inside receivers work a dig and a pivot-out combo underneath. The backside outside receiver runs a deep post-corner style go route up the numbers to hold the safety, clearing space for the dig sitting down in the middle of the field. This is a man beater at heart, since the rail and dig create natural leverage against man defenders trailing from outside alignment, but it also stresses zone defenders who have to choose between the rail flooding the sideline and the dig settling in the void behind the second level. Primary read starts with the dig crossing the middle, then works out to the HB rail if the underneath defenders sink and take away the in-cut route.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, since a shallow drop from the middle linebacker signals he is sitting on the dig and you should user him off with a spy or lurk before the throw develops. Key the corner over the HB out of the backfield, if he presses hard on the running back's release, expect him to trail the rail route in man coverage and you can bait a throw with your safety help underneath. Identify single-high safety rotation before the snap, because Cover 3 leaves a soft spot in the deep middle that the dig route is designed to exploit, so rotate a safety late to close that window. Zone blitz packages that bring five rushers while dropping a defensive lineman into the shallow zone can undercut the dig route, so spy the interior gaps and be ready to sink a linebacker into that throwing lane. Watch for man coverage on the HB out of the backfield, if a linebacker gets matched up in man on the rail route that is a clear mismatch you want to attack immediately with pass rush contain to buy time.
Usage Tips
Check the middle of the field pre-snap because the dig route is your bread and butter versus single-high shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3, where the MLB has to widen for the rail and opens the throwing window. If you see two safeties deep (Cover 2 or Cover 4), lean on the HB rail since it stretches the flat defender vertically and the corner has to make a tough decision on route depth. Hot route the far outside receiver into a quick slant or hitch if you are getting no protection help and need a faster answer against a heavy blitz look. This play hits best on second and medium to third and medium, giving the dig enough field to sit down and the HB rail room to work vertically without needing a home run shot. Pair this with Dig Y-out or Dig Slot Out in the same set to keep the defense guessing on which underneath route is the true first read, since the formation and initial route stems look nearly identical.
