Pivot Dig out of Shotgun Split Close (20 personnel) shows a three level route combo on the right side with a matching outlet on the left. The inside slot runs a pivot route, snapping outward then breaking back inside to sit down in the middle of the field as an underneath option, while the outside receiver on that side stems vertically then works a deep dig across the field over the middle. On the backside, the wide receiver runs a shallow drag from the numbers all the way across the formation, giving the quarterback a fast horizontal outlet if the dig and pivot are covered. This is a man beater built on route combos that create natural picks and separation off the pivot's change of direction, with the primary progression going dig first, then pivot, then backside drag.
Defensive Reads
Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest vulnerability since the pivot route's redirect combined with the dig crossing creates natural rubs that are tough for man defenders to fight through. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the intermediate middle zone, since that user controlled defender can jump the dig route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Cover 3 zone with a hard sitting middle linebacker can undercut the pivot route, so identify linebacker depth at the snap to judge if that throwing lane is open. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers up the middle can disrupt the timing of the dig route, so check protection or hot route the backside drag as a quick answer against pressure. Two high safety shells with soft corners can bait the quarterback into the pivot route only to have an underneath defender break on it late, so read leverage of the flat or hook defender before committing to that throw.
Usage Tips
Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as press corners or a single high safety before calling this, since the pivot route's stutter and redirect is designed to shake man defenders loose.
On third and medium to long, trust the deep dig as your first read because it sits down in soft spots of zone and creates YAC opportunities against man coverage that follows the initial vertical stem.
If the defense shows two high safeties, hot route the pivot receiver into a quicker option or check down to the backside drag sooner since the dig may be capped by a deep zone defender.
Pair this play with Mesh or Dig Y-out earlier in a drive to condition linebackers to jump underneath crossers, then come back to Pivot Dig when they bite and open up the deep dig window.
Use play-action heavy tendencies from this set like FB Inside or HB Power O to slow down linebacker drops, making the dig route's crossing window bigger against man and zone alike.
