Mtn HB Swing lines up out of Shotgun Split Close with pre-snap Mtn (motion) sending a receiver across the formation before the snap, which can help identify man versus zone coverage before the ball is even snapped. The HB releases out of the backfield on a swing route to the flat, giving the quarterback an immediate outlet against pressure, while the underneath receivers work short crossing and out routes to occupy linebackers and clear the sideline. This is primarily a man beater and quick-game concept designed to get the ball out fast, with the HB swing serving as the first read and the shallow crossers as the progression reads if the flat is taken away.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth and width before the snap since shallow, tight linebacker alignment signals man coverage that the swing route can exploit immediately. Track the motion man through the formation and see if a defender follows him man to man, which confirms man coverage and tells the quarterback the HB swing will have room. Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone shells with linebackers sitting in short zones can take away the swing lane, forcing the quarterback to progress to the underneath crossers. User controlled defenders who jump the HB swing route early open up the crossing routes behind them, so watch for a defender abandoning zone integrity to chase the flat. Disguised blitzes with a linebacker spying the backfield can shut this play down since the HB swing loses its blocking angle and outlet value if the defender stays home.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to bait linebackers into showing man coverage by tracking the motion man across the formation before the snap.
This play excels on third and short or first down situations where the HB swing can pick up easy yardage after minimal YAC responsibility.
If the defense shows blitz, get the ball out quickly to the HB swing since it acts as a built-in hot route against pressure.
Pair this call with Mtn Y-Flood or Mtn Y-fork in the same set to keep the defense guessing on which route combo follows the same Mtn motion look.
Against aggressive user linebackers who key on the backfield, consider hot routing the HB to a delayed release so the swing route develops after initial blitzers commit.
